It was barely recognizable.
The old neighborhood I couldn’t wait to leave had gone through many transformations. From dense blocks of tenements flying clothesline flags of mended laundry to various attempts at gentrification that gradually replaced the original structures with updated designs that themselves became dated.
It was barely recognizable as home, but resembled all too well the current state of neighborhoods I’d moved on to before moving on again. Before returning for a funeral and reunion and wondering if things could have been different if I’d stayed and put my efforts into appreciating the place from which I came.
